Today we look at the third of Jesus' miracles recorded in John's Gospel - the Healing by the Pool. As we have already seen the main purpose of these miracles are to point people to the reality of who Jesus is. In the previous miracle in chapter 4 we saw the emphasis was not so much on the healing of the official's son as it was on the official's faith in Jesus.
In our passage today the miracle provides the backdrop for the emerging hostility of the Jewish leadership towards Jesus for what they see as his Sabbath law breaking but above all for his claim to be equal with God.
