Jacob is a deceiver - he has deceived both his father Isaac and his brother Esau. But now Jacob is on the run because his brother wants to kill him. Jacob is making a journey of more than 400 miles to what he hopes is the safe haven of his uncle Laban.
While on his way the LORD meets him in a dream at Bethel and says, “I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.”
God is not mentioned in our passage today so how do we know whether God is keeping the promise that He has given Jacob? We need to look carefully at the circumstances the writer highlights and then seek to discern how we can see the hand of the LORD working in the background.
